Abstract

Pesticides are hazardous chemicals that are used to control pests that threaten humans and play a role in supporting agricultural and plantation productivity as well as eradicating disease vectors. With the increasing use of pesticides, the risk of exposure for farmers will rise and may effect nervous system function by inhibiting activity of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase thereby reducing acetylcholinesterase levels. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine into choline and acetic acid. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of spraying frequency and duration of work on acetylcholinesterase in corn farmers who use pesticides. This study employed a photometric method with a laboratory observational design and used purposive sampling. The analysis of effects was conducted using the chi-square test. Of the 20 farmers samples, 18 had normal acetylcholinesterase levels ranging from 5.523 to 11.151 U/L while 2 samples showed elevated levels ranging from 13.572 – 14.453 U/L compared to normal acetylcholinesterase levels of 4.620 – 11.500 U/L for men and 3.930 – 10.800 U/L for women. The results of the test examining the effect of spraying frequency and duration of work on acetylcholinesterase levels yielded p-values of 0.456 and 0.329 U/L. Conclusion: There was no significant effect of spraying frequency or duration of work on acetylcholinesterase levels.
